Hello fellow Awesomenaut players, I've been playing Awesomenauts for about three days now and have fiddled around with all of the characters. I found my favorites are Lonestar and Froggy G, but often times I go into a match, and those two are taken and I'm left to play a decent Clunk or a Voltar. I would love to learn how to play Yuri though, since you don't see a lot of Yuri players out there.
However, everyone says how vicious Yuri is, but I don't see it. Whenever I play Yuri, I just get steamrolled by a Leon Chameleon knocking me out of the air with a basic strike, or a Froggy G using his Splash Dance. So my general question is, how do you play Yuri? I've messed around with his builds, but I'm thinking I'm just playing him wrong on the field. I tend max out on my ability to heal droids with my field droids, and occassionally flying a little bit ahead and dropping mines ahead of the group I'm healing, but I have no idea how to combat other Awesomenauts, or how to balance my combat and off-healing. Any suggestions?

I find that Yuri is best as a support class. Stick with another team mate and you will be fine. Trying to go solo with a Yuri is MADNESS. I usually upgrade his laser first thing, get the healing effect, and then focus the rest on mines.
Laser the turrets when no one is around, but once the other team gets there, laser and heal your teammates then run away and drop mines on your way back. Not a very effective tactic, but it seems to work for me.

First off he stinks with bots or unskilled teams, he needs to do specific things since he cant push.
Yuri can walk around and do w/e he wants. Your best map imo is worm pit, Towers have no platforms above them, you have really good jungle control due to jet pack and easy escape. Like all characters the best option is to rush money tree and get 2 jungle creeps. This allows you to get mines.
Early game you have no real role, Set mines where ever, try to poke with laser. If you can aggressively place mines, float above them or set behind them. I suggest maxing damage asap, blowing people up for free is cool. I feel it makes a more impact then cooldown reduction. Bouncing is a pretty good option depending on matchups before damage. Only real thing I try to do early game is harass with laser since they are not strong enough to engage and kill me.
Once you max out damage you wanna be aggressive, Bouncy mines set up behind opponents by constantly lane swapping can make big plays, Make sure you dont make the bounce absurdly high (it bounces to where you placed it from) You got 54 damage burst with more damage at high rank level. 54 will burst leon and froggy g to insanely low. With laser pressure and possible escape blocking mines, you can score some easy kills. Even before cooldown reduction the upgrade to make the laser pull people is AMAZING. It's really strong, should be picked up even at a ~280~ price tag.
Now comes to the problem....He cant push. He pushes so poorly. His laser deals 1 damage per tick....mayb 3 damage per second? If you wanna mine the tower you need to face check it, which draws aggro, and you only deal 26 damage with like a 5 second cooldown (pre-reduction) pretty lame. BUT he actually IS good at pushing....if you have a team. Cause if you go a clunk/voltar/yuri combo. You push the lane, all 3 of you stack on top of eachother, then you start stacking mines where you stand. If they engage, they die. It's pretty hilarious. Really effective on early game push.
Thats basically it, you just kinda have to understand how to play it.....it's interesting concept how they made him, he has potential in organized play due to his massive burst and control. He rank him at 4th best even though I suppose clunk should take that spot, but i feel yuri has a better game potentially through out I think as the game progresses.
Quick list of tips -Keep resetting jetpack vs leon since he cancels jetpack -Try to gank since 1v1 is not strong early game, coming from behind is best -Positioning yourself with laser is important, you need to be able to cancel laser and re-do it constantly, you cant let them hard engage you. -Mine creep waves. Use them to defend and to protect team while pushing. -Place mines everywhere, Doesnt matter where. If its off cooldown use it. Just save it when you feel your about to try and do an objective. -Counter jungle enemies, you can steal easily and harass harshly. -Hard defense on base. Since you have no defense leon can rush and kill it easily. All you need to do is set up a base with abunch of bouncing mines and he cant win the game LOL. If you have a good froggy G he should be able to eventually win by himself. -His time warp is terrible early. Unless you wanna get the healing aura which is cool. It's so short, it stun's you while you set it up. It's such a sidetrack of money.
Best Team Comps Yuri/Voltar/Clunk - Team push to win Yuri/Leon/Froggy G - Team Farm Players (Froggy should max stun duration on splash dash first while leon maxes tongue distance) Yuri/Froggy G/Clunk - This just allows you to do ok early pushing into froggy g carrying late game while clunk and yuri defends if needed. This team is not very optimal

Max mine damage and cooldown, get the movement speed upgrade. Place mines aggressively. When teammates are engaging an enemy place mines on his possible retreat path and move ahead a bit. This is a great strategy.
I can usually go 10-0 or so with Yuri. Rarely die. Leon can get you sometimes but that's it really. Froggy G could theoretically with the max stun dash + tornado combo but it's unlikely to work, usually stun wears before you hit the ground and you're free to fly off and heal or whatever.

How are people using Yuri's time warp? I'm basically just using the item that speeds him up to make fast escapes or bombard an area with mines quickly. It doesn't seem to be very effective to use it to heal since it hardly sticks around long enough to really make a difference.

Early on I generally use the timewarp as a way to trap low life opponents trying to escape. Their slow movement speed coupled with the relatively long range of the laser can give you quite the edge in such situations.
In late game, the healing and speed upgrade works wonders when pressing the attack alongside a few droids and a super droid. This is only really useful if you get the two duration upgrades though, making it a very expensive abillity...

Whenever I play Yuri, I tend to capitalize on his sub-healing abilities, so it is a rather expensive upgrade, but it's a nice little wrap up to the wounded, I've made a lot of differences with that ability just by giving my teammates one bar of health. Yet Yuri still feels awkward. I posted this thread to get answers, but I seem to get more questions than answers since according to the above answers, it seems I can go with a lot of different builds. I'm just confused on how to use him efficiently in the field, since he's squishy, he flies, and he doesn't pump out damage like Froggy G or Leon do right off the bat.

Use him as support, and defense, lay your mines infront of the enemy turrets when attacking and yours when defending. His laser hits multiple targets and can reach opponets even when standing safely behind turrets so he can be a real pain against those voltar pushers who like to hide behind their bots. I like Yuri, hes definately not your leader in kills but hes that fly on the back of the opponents that they can just never seem to get rid of. If you want to be more offensive spec the mines to split, do more damage and increase longevity and have the warp fields radius, duration, and increase attack speed. If you want to play defensive again use the same mine spec except on the warp do the heal instead of increasing speed.

personally I use Yuri to set up traps with his mines (Crazy I know) my buddy usually goes leon and herds the enemy towards my traps (usually at the terminus of a jump pad or hidden behind health pickup). If you take the 2 damage upgrades and the long lasting mine upgrade you cam become a real nuisance since each mine is doing 78 damage a pop the enemy tends to focus on getting rid of you which can give your team a few moments unmolested while they push on turrets and usually when the enemy realise they should be protecting they are weakened enough that they can be easily mopped up. That being said this only works when your playing with a team that capitalizes on the opportunity and the enemy team being easily lead astray but it does work. Also as a side note there is something hilarious about setting up mines in the central tunnel in the jungle map and having people hit the bottom bounce pad only to fly headlong into 200+ damage worth of mines

Definitely, capitalizing on tricky mine placement is hilarious and awesome. Makes me want to play around with Yuri again later tonight. I got all sour on him after trying aura builds and getting rolled.
Is there a verdict on where to spend your money in the laser? Damage or rate of fire? Does rate of fire increase the effectiveness of turret-destruction or the pull effect?
