... is removing all your unlocks.
Why does it do this? You're sacrificing gameplay advantages for a small icon next to your name -- sure it is for "bragging rights" -- but when there are TEN (10) prestige levels it can get pretty obsessive.
It takes approximately 15 hours or so to reach prestige 1. That means to max out on prestige you'd have to play for over 150 hours; that seems a bit excessive. Especially excessive when you factor in that you lose all your unlocks (sans characters).
Instead of removing all the unlocks, why can't we just have it take another 55 levels to get prestige but keep the unlocks?
It would be like if you played League of Legends -- unlocked a 6300 IP Champion, a full rune page for the Champion, and then deleted it all to get a little star next to your name. How is that fun again?
I'm sure there will be people clamoring that it adds replayability because you're unlocking things again -- but does it really? You're unlocking things you've already tried and played with. It adds no more interesting upgrades or additional levels of decision making. It is simply promoting grinding levels.
Solution? Just allow people to keep their upgrades. If someone has already prestige'd then give them all their unlocks back.
Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?

First time he's ever seen a Prestige system in a game... I'm far too tired to explain it to him...

I don't get how unlocking 100% of the game's content in 15 hours and then resetting could be compared to unlocking a 6300 champion in LoL, which is 1% of the game's total unlocks.
I'm prestige 2 by the way.

The reset of most abilities is an incentive to work on different builds (usually the best builds require a fully unlocked loadout, like Froggy with Thorn Fish) and well... it prolongs the gameplay quite a bit if you want a shiny Skull or Winged Awesomenauts medal by your name at all times.
If you don't care for Prestige, it's completely optional, so you can just max out your level and never bother with it. It's like on the PS3 Leaderboards, the #1 Player has Prestige Rank 10, but the #2 Player never bothered grinding it, and has no medal. Still doesn't take away from the fact that he's a top player, that's for sure.

My problem is "prestige," is checked by default and it doesn't actually explain anywhere in the text that it'll delete all your upgrades. Sure, if you come from Call of Duty (one of like... 3 well known game series that actually use prestige. We don't all play these games, guys!) then you'll assume that by default. But a tooltip should explain an option!
(Although I assume you probably get a popup box asking if you'd like to prestige that explains it properly, I have yet to prestige.)

Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions? You can NOT prestige if you feel so strongly about keeping everything. No one says you have to.

When it gives you the option at max level, it'll say you lose your item unlocks, if you say no, it won't ask you again until you tick it again in the options.

If you didn't lose your abilities there would be no point in not getting prestige. There is nothing unfair about losing your abilities since you agree to do so and it isn't required, it is simply there for players looking to challenge themselves, or in some bad cases show off.
