I get kills with Gnaw pretty well. I only got one kill streak but that's because 90% of matches include Froggy G, Leon, or both.
I tend to get my kills from someone either running from a fight (spit finishes them off) or people underestimate me. I go toe to toe with them for a sure shot with spit. Upon doing so they're usually apt to die so I run.
The run to find health, they die. I taunt and the world is a brighter place.

I keep telling people this, but it doesn't seem to be sinking in. Gnaw's melee attack is bugged. If you have good movement, it sucks immensely. He is absolute * at chasing unless it's all happening in a straight line.
Why? Because, if you run him in one direction and attack with your mouse in the opposite direction, those attacks either won't connect or connect on the wrong side. This means that if you want to hit reliably, you need to always be moving towards the opponent, and if you're doing that you're doing it wrong. Ever been in a dogfight against a Leon, jumping around each other in a circle? Yeah, this bug is why you lost.
Once this bug is fixed, people will start hitting a lot more with him in melee, and he'll get a lot more kills.

As a big Leon player, I rely on this far too much, so when I play Gnaw and it doesn't work.. I'm just useless. :'( As soon as they fix it (which they will), I can see myself playing Gnaw a lot more.

Had a few good sprees on Gnaw last night, including 9-0 in one match.
My build was focused on Spit and then Melee upgrades (lifesteal, attack speed, dot damage - thinking about subbing in the reduced time on dot for attack speed potentially).
Funny thing is, because his upgrades are so expensive I just never bought weedlings and I didn't really miss them.
If you time your spit right (also slow on it late game) and get a few melee hits off with increased damage people usually underestimate the damage the DoT will do as they run away.
The lifesteal is also very handy when pushing, you just have to be careful about when to rely on it and when to bail.
Not an expert by any means but i had a positive result each game for the 4 or so I played him in a row so it might be worth thinking about.

Spit+melee is a lot better a build than anything involving weedlings. Weedlings are really just a harassing mechanic the dots are where the real damage is. I usually don't get weedlings either. I have found though that the fact that the game shows you how much health you will have after the dot ends is a little dumb. The point of a dot is to make the enemy worry but they can stay and fight as long as the fading white bar doesn't ready the the left side of their health bar.
