Works here on both arch linux and debian with no need to install libtxc_dxtn, as long as I export force_s3tc_enable=true before running the game.

I'm using SandyBridge i3 - core and Ubuntu 12.04 beta.
Both, using driconf as well as exporting "force_s3tc_enable=true" works for me. So maybe just extending is the bashscript (the "first" executable file is a bash script) could be a workaround for anyone not wanting so enable s3tc globally.

The force_s3tc_enabled=true trick doesn't seem to work on Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid). I can see a tiny bit more, but the textures all fail to load still:

unsupported texture format in setup_hardware_state
failed to validate texture for unit 0.
unsupported texture format in setup_hardware_state
failed to validate texture for unit 1.

I'm guessing that's because Lucid has a much older version of Mesa (I can't compile the libtxc_dxtn library, and xorg-edgers doesn't appear to have it for anything older than 11.10)

So, if you can figure out a way to get around the S3TC stuff that would be great. I was planning to upgrade to 12.04 anyway but I was hoping to wait for the release :)

Thanks!

I think the force s3tc setting is a newer feature in X, but the libtxc_dxtn library should compile on 10.04, (and even older distros) and provide the s3tc support needed. Otherwise upgrading to a newer distribution release may be your only option.
