How does it feel to be living in 2017 (almost 2018) at long last?

Depends. Would you rather your celebs dead, or rapists?

Unfortunately, it's not legal yet - it was a (voluntary) postal survey asking people if they thought it should be legal or not, and therefore was not binding. For it to be legalized, it still has to go through government, which will probably be a lot of work and a lot of hassle.

It is a step in the right direction, though - and not to mention it was somewhat rigged against the 'Yes' voters: if the vote was for 'No', then the government would not be allowing a parliamentary vote or debate on whether or not gay marriage should be allowed. If the vote was for 'Yes', it wouldn't be binding anyways, so no obligation to discuss it, but at this point it seems very likely they'll be holding a debate anyways.

In addition to that, the majority vote was 61% for 'YES', which is actually a pretty impressive turnout, considering this:
Quote:
At 61.6 per cent the 'yes' received more votes than Labor or the Coalition have ever got at a federal election.

The highest vote ever for the Coalition was 56.9 per cent in 1966. The highest vote ever for Labor was 53.2 per cent in 1983.

And, my city was very in favour of the 'YES' vote, with 70% voting for 'yes'.

Edit:
Quote:
Speaking immediately after the survey results were released, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull called the outcome "overwhelming" and recommitted to passing same-sex marriage legislation in the Parliament before Christmas.

Sounds like progress

Kind of wish we could switch places, at my country even holding hands with someone having same sex is considered still a crime.

Cool, now I only need to become:
1)Australian
2)Gay

kidding. We had similar here few years ago, but I think the approval rate was closer to 80% than 60%. Is that (walking hand to hand) forbidden anywhere else than muslim countries btw?

According to Pop, it is in Poland.
Probably Russia too. Serbia maybe?
And i think i saw some pic that showed that Czechia and Slovakia are the most anti-gay in the EU, but im not entirely sure.

Edit: I was wrong about Czechia and Slovakia, but the tolerance is still low around 30%.

Azerbaijan is apparently least tolerant in Europe (entire continent) with only 5%.
