Why do we need seasons? Season resets only needed to exist in the past because of the lack of rank decay. If we have that, seasons don't really serve any purpose but for benchmarks.

Personally, it all sounds needlessly complicated to me. Get points for winning matches, lose points for losing. Simple. It just needs to not be tied to rank. Also, there's the concern that high leagues may become bloated if there's no way to rank down again. That sounds like an unnecessary feature.

Seasons give you a time limited goal, and they introduce a forced rank decay. It's more fun to aim for a goal to hit each month than it is to aim for it and then just... play enough to not lose it.

The hard floors allow you to explore naut diversity since you can't fall any further. They also help reduce the stress from losing sprees. No matter how bad your losing speee is, you can't fall beyond a certain point. Your rating will, but not your league.

The top leagues shouldn't become bloated if we make the challenge appropriate. Dropping 2 leagues every new season will prevent that if it takes 50+ games to earn that league back, never mind going higher.

Edited OP with adjusted goal values.

Assuming a consistent win rate spread across infinite games:
L7 is below 20% win rate.
L6 is between 20 and 33%.
L5 is between 33 and 43%.
L4 is between 43 and 50%.
L3 is between 50 and 60%.
L2 is between 60 and 67%.
L1 is above 67% win rate.

Assuming a 75% win rate for the best players, you can advance from leagues:
4->3 in 20 games.
3->2 in 27 games.
2->1 in 40 games.

Each new season would need about 70 games to reach back to league 1 (which most league 1 players are probably hitting each month).

If this sounds like too much, numbers could be scaled back a little further to make league 2 and league 1 a little easier.

You need fresh seasons because without them the game feels incredibly boring and stale. Especially with all the current issues the leaderboard/rating system has if lets say they all get magically fixed and everything is peachy you can then an only really then think about making season resets continuous every 4 months~. Nauts isn't a game where you can go half a year without a season reset, it's the type of game that really needs them every 2-3 months to keep the game fresh, fun and interesting.

I would see this as a nice addition to the matchmaking.

Rating and all would only exist for the sake of matching people together - and this would be a lot closer to what a Ranking system should be.

Thanks for the feedback.

I'll never say ronimo should do exactly this, but we should certainly discuss options to take like this that might help us move past the current system.

Excellent idea.
Divorcing Rating from Leaderboards is the solution.

Monthly resets are good and the decay is good.

TC, you did well, Ronimo will pick this up.

One more slight adjustment to the OP. The "league 1 leaderboard" would use a season specific rating, which would be separate from your lifetime rating used for matchmaking. This would help keep the L1 leaderboards fresh each season.
