I bought this game a while ago but never got around to playing it, until now. I really like what I have played of it so far and I am considering buying the 'All Nauts Pack' and persuading some friends to play this game with me etc...

...however, I noticed that the game does not have a LAN or Direct IP connection. This for me is an issue, since if I am going to really get into a game I don't like the thought of the game's existence hinging on a server which could lose its funding at any given moment.

Does any one know if the Dev's aim to patch the game with LAN and/or Direct IP; especially if they ever decide to stop funding the server for the game (just put it out there for the fans before they ditch the sever)?

You speak like it's a volatile chance of them suddenly running out of funding, which isn't happening anytime soon. It's pretty safe to buy the DLC.

it's provably not in their plans, if you want my advice, and know i have been around for some time now, dont buy any DLC until you get that feature done, don't live expecting, that's how this game has been on life support for the past 3 years, only from people who keep expecting things to improve

Game is peer to peer, not server based.

Right, but you still need servers to match people together.

Did Ronimo actually pay anything when it was based on Steam matchmaking? As horrible as it sounds, if Ronimo really wanted the game to live without them ever spending (much) money again, they could probably just push it back to Steam system. That or maintain a smaller server since for the game to not be paying its own server it's likely quite a small number anyways.

That aside, I'm pretty sure the game will continue its online matchmaking for long time to come, but how long exactly you're wanting I have no idea. Even if the game never made another dime, remember a lot of the funding from post-kickstarter support went entirely into the funding of the server, likely keeping it going for a number of years, so I wouldn't really be concerned there.
