I can think of only two major limitations to using Python: slower execution speed and larger bundled applications. The reason why it's so big is that my app packages the entire Python runtime, as well as some relatively large libraries. If I remove the graphical interface, this should free up about 6 MB.

Both of which can be significantly improved by converting the python script to C with cython and then compiling it with gcc. Should work well for simple scripts, big projects introduce some complications but I've compiled a (rather simple) pyqt project before without any major issues.

Note: there seems to be a rather significant bug that can be triggered under unknown circumstances. I'm trying to find its cause right now. Please hold off on downloading, unless you want to help debug; essentially, make sure you can always press "1" safely, as well as "Alt 1". It seems like after a while, this stops working.

Alright, it's fixed now, but it no longer works with the "Alt" key - you have to press a key directly, no key combinations. This is because the library wasn't properly equipped to know which keys are currently depressed (and I'm not skilled/patient enough to write up my own solution). It's simpler this way, and also helps avoid a lot of other problems.

Re Nodja: I looked into your library, but I encountered several problems while tinkering with it (for one thing, parts of the program wouldn't shut down even after being told to, and inconsistently so).

Doesn't work for me. I binded some letters and it doesn't seem to do anything.

Did you launch the program and then click on Start?

If you did, could you post your configuration file below?

I did, and I pressed "run" once it opened.

Code:
# AwesomenautsKeyBinder
# Config
#
# Key bindings are a combination of the Alt key and another key which must be
# pressed in this order.
# To define a new binding, add an entry for the key name (see below for valid
# names) with its message, and another entry with the key's name with "_team"
# appended - this determines whether or not the message will be sent to the
# team or globally.
# Key Names: 0 to 9, A to Z (capitalized), F1 to F24, NUMPAD0 to NUMPAD9.
# Please don't try to use other key names, unless you want horrible things to
# happen. Avoid function keys if possible, however.

[KeyBindings]
W = Careful, invis hero.
W_team = True

X = We need to stick together.
X_team = True

C = Going for Solar Boss.
C_team = True

E = Thanks!
E_team = True

B = Sorry, my bad.
B_team = True

N = Heal me please D:
N_team = True

V = Get out of there, they're coming!
V_team = true

A = Good luck, have fun.
A_team = False

R = This wasn't a gg... wp tho.
R_team = False

F = I have a nice little program that allowed me to put in keybindings, all I have to do is press a button and it types it out for me. link is on the forums!
F_team = False

This you mean?

You're using the first version I posted, the one which had a bug. I've fixed it since, but you can't use Alt combinations anymore - you have to press a key directly. Which is why I don't recommend binding it to letters, otherwise if you type a normal message with that letter in, you'll start sending the bound message too. Re-download the file for the latest version.
