What happened to it!? I remember seeing it in the concept art section and thinking it would be in the third faction, but it isn't. :( What was wrong with it I wonder. :?:

After seeing the concept art I think it was going to be for the Aztec's. If you look on the media page you can see condors picking up enemies or friendlies. I could be wrong though.

The Condor never saw the light because it's a flying unit. We had a hard time to fit everything in the multiplayerscreen and although we had some great flying units, they would just not fit the screen. If we would have implemented flying units the game needed to be much more zoomed out, which would make selecting and targeting units more difficult.

The condor would pick up units and throw them back to the base, only ranged units would be able to hit it.

That really is an awesome idea!
Too bad it didn't work out.
But hey, now you've got something for the sequel :)

We also had some kind of huge zeppelin-like unit that could be filled with axe throwers. 8-)

Both the condor and the zeppelin were never even prototyped, though, because the first splitscreen multiplayer version of the game (with only two different units and two spells) already showed that we had no room on the screen to show serious amounts of sky for the flying units. We designed everything to make sure it worked well in splitscreen, since that has the most limitations on screen-space. :geek:

Pssh, zeppelin, that's not really doing it any justice :P

It was a glorious flying ship! A Viking Longboat that would take the souls of the vanquished warriors to Valhalla!... and let them throw axes down onto the battlefield along the way

As Joost mentioned, units needed to be functional, and we wanted to focus on our art (speaking as an artist) as well as cool gameplay, so having to zoom out for you to see the flying units would reduce the characters to the size of lemmings. Cute, maybe, but I personally prefer them more up close and personal like they are now.

We got pretty attached to some of the characters that didn't make it (like the longboat), but no matter how hard we'd try, we sometimes couldn't get them to work properly and it was time to give those treasured ideas the axe. Never a fun thing, but it helps the game in the end.

Once the game is around a bit, we can post more units that ended up on the cutting room floor next to the condor. No sense in getting you all giddy about stuff that didn't make it into the game when it's not even out yet. :)
