Problems that would arise from this is that it would add to visual clutter around the map and unless carefully implemented could lead to confusion of whether it's a skill or not.

Joost has this covered as well, it seems.
Check the bit about corpses in particular.
EDIT: fixed the link

On the subject of palette swaps easy or not: remember awesomenauts sprites are not made of entirely flat set of colours. In fact, I might be wrong, but they include some "smoothness" on them too, right? This means such matters can not simply be colour replaced as you would need to deal with a whole gradient of colours at each colour border.

Furthermore as Joost explained, they do not use greyscale/neutral sprites, so you'd need to recreate those manually first before you make a set of pallette swap.

Yes a child can hue-edit or add a colour mask, but if you're talking making it look remotely professional, with no artifacting, loss of detail, or other visual errors from the transition, you'll need lots of time and resources, especially in the case of these mountainous spritesheets. Considering Ronimo has such a large artist team I'm sure they'd be open to modifying some palette swaps were it a simple task, but in how this is designed it really isn't.

As silly as it sounds, I love the idea of being able to customise a droid in the game. I could be trying to protect my top hat droid above all else! :weedling:

In fact you could take it further: you could have a turret you customise, or team barrier style, shop UI style, HUD style, maybe even some death animations and healthpacks?

Soon the entire map will be a hideous mess of santa hats, ribbons, gold, sparkles, fluffy pink stuff, trophies, hot-pink skirts, flags, pebbles, top hats, and other miscellaneous decorations and questionable fashion sense.

I feel like they really should have a visible shield on the turrets whenever they are not firing before this is even considered, IMO. For gameplay reasons.

Not to mention that the current look feels kinda dated at this point. I mean, even the basic drop pods got a new coat of polish... turrets could probably use the same treatment.

How to make turrets look more modern and polished: add a top hat, unicorn horn, reindeer antlers, and rabbit shoes. :chew:

Turret and droid skins are another good idea for point sinks. Droids don't have TOO many animations, turrets even less. Should be simple enough to make happen.

More unlockable garbage is fine if people really want that, but unlockable skins, from all angles, is a terrible, time-and-money wasting, bad idea.

I agree with what you said about free unlocks not being profitable, but having free unlockables in a game is not a bad idea. People already view making things like skins cost real money a cash grab. You need to have free unlockables to counteract that. I know it might be much to do, but each naut should have at least one skin that you can buy with awesomepoints OR real money. Usually, these types of skins are just the main skin but recolored.

I could have sworn Ronimo hinted at this like over a year ago
