Hello,
I bought swords and soldiers for Linux due to Humble Bundle for Android 2. Anyway, I'd like to play the game with friends in splitscreen or LAN/over internet, which I still can't after finishing the vikings story. I've found contradictorily statements to multiplayer support.

Is there multiplayer for linux versions? If so, is it splitscreen or online multiplayer. How can I unlock multiplayer?

If not: Why so?

sincerly

No, sorry, there is no online multiplayer support for Linux. The reason for this is that we built all the multiplayer using Steam, and unfortunately there is no Steam for Linux. For this same reason the DRM-free versions for Mac and Windows also don't have online multiplayer. We did look into alternatives for the Linux version, but the amount of work is too large for a small indie studio like ours.

As for splitscreen: this is not supported in the Windows/Mac/Linux versions. There is splitscreen on Wii/PS3/iPad/Android tablets.

That's sad, both splitscreen and online-support lag.
Anyway, since there are steam keys in the bundle, and Steam may run on Linux using Wine, would there online support, if I run S&S on Steam with the keys?

I am not sure how far Wine will get you, but it might work. The Steam version indeed has full multiplayer, but I don't know whether that will still work through Wine's emulation. As far as I have heard, Wine is usually pretty good with Steam, but I don't know whether that is the case here.

By the way, do let us know whether multiplayer works with Wine on Linux! If it does, we can advance it to other players as well. :)

I can't log in on steam, which seems to be a linux/wine problem so you have to be patient. Maybe someone else could report?

How about just permitting IP matches?

I bought this game because I'm passionate RTS fan and I'd love to play this game multiplayer!

I rushed all campaign because I was thinking it was a mode to unlock... bad wikipedia articles about game features!

I'm a bit annoyed about that (low cost!) missing feature.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!

I'm afraid it is not really low cost (otherwise we would have included it already!). We do all our networking through Steam (matchmaking, packet reliability and even our sockets and such), so all code related to networking would have to be rewritten for Linux. That's a lot of work...

I would like to fix the Wikipedia, but I couldn't find a part there that mentions which versions have which feature (Wii and iOS also don't have online multiplayer). Which part of the Wikipedia page mentioned this incorrectly?
